Palo Alto is one of the most affluent cities in the nation, with a school district rated one of the highest in the Bay Area. It boasts a vibrant downtown area, high-end shopping, and the sprawling Stanford campus. For these reasons, Palo Alto is one of the most desirable places to live in the Bay Area.
The city is located south of Menlo Park in the northwestern corner of Santa Clara County. Palo Alto was initially founded in 1884 when Leland Stanford founded Stanford University to honor his late son. The town was incorporated ten years later with the name Palo Alto.
Today, Palo Alto is home to world-renowned companies like Tesla, Xerox, VMWare, and many other booming tech companies. Companies such as Apple, HP, and PayPal were once located here but have moved to nearby cities.
Palo Alto lies at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountains. As a result, the small area is ecologically diverse and is home to a variety of wildlife. A quick drive west can take you up gorgeous mountainsides filled with hiking trails. A short drive to the east takes you to San Francisco Bay and Baylands Nature Reserve, home to over 15 miles of hiking, walking, and biking trails. The marshland is an excellent spot for kayaking and bird watching as well.
Beautiful, old Craftsman and colonial homes dot the northern end of town. Many homes in the area date back between 1890 and 1940. In the southern end of town are many mid-century modern Eichler homes from the ’40s and ’50s.
